When Harry Redknapp says he’s going to have a quiet January transfer window, it means he’s only going to try and make a few great signings.

Reports from Portugal suggest that Tottenham have had a £5m bid for Benfica’s former River Plate, Barcelona and Real Madrid forward, Javier Saviola.

Saviola is undoubtedly talented but has perhaps never quite fulfilled his promise on the biggest stage and at 28 could have problems fitting into the pace of the Premiership after a career in the Spanish, Portuguese and Argentinian leagues.  This season he has scored 16 goals in 25 games for Benfica.

While another Striker would enable Redknapp to offload Roman Pavlyuchenko and if desired, Robbie Keane, the position most in need of bolstering in the Tottenham squad is defensive midfield.

With only Wilson Palacios providing steel in the centre, a backup or complimentary tackler would finally give Redknapp depth and competition in every position (except goalkeeper).

Mathieu Flamini began his career in Marseille before moving to Arsenal where his loss to AC Milan is still felt.  Negotiations between Milan and Tottenham are quoted as being around a fee of £7.5m.

If both moves were to go through it would practically guarantee that both Pavlyuchenko and David Bentley are to be sold.
