Looking to make their “marquee signing” under Carson Yeung’s new ownership, Birmingham City have made a bid for former promising player and the latest in the long line of failed Benitez wingers, Ryan Babel. Actually the latest is Albert Riera but Babel’s transformation from Dutch wonderkid to Nani-style liability has been the more spectacular and baffling.
For Birmingham it would be a big name and a statement of intent to take a player off the team one point ahead of you in the league.
For Liverpool it would make some funds available for a manager who has not exactly excelled in the transfer market.
For Babel it would mean a place in a first eleven.
