Do Manchester United Always get Drawn at Home?

It often feels as if Manchester United are always drawn at home in the FA Cup, but is this really the case?

Here are Manchester Uniteds results from every FA Cup going back to the 1999/2000 season when they didn’t enter (excluding replays, semis and final):

ManUtd v LeedsUnited
Fulham 0-4 ManUtd
Derby 1-4 ManUtd
ManUtd 2-1 Tottenham
Southampton 0-3 ManUtd
ManUtd 0-1 Portsmouth
ManUtd 4-0 Arsenal
ManUtd 3-1 Tottenham
AstonVilla 0-2 ManUtd
Middlesbro 2-2 ManUtd
ManUtd 1-1 Reading
ManUtd 2-1 Portsmouth
ManUtd 2-1 AstonVilla
Liverpool 1-0 ManUtd
Wolves 0-3 ManUtd
Burton 0-0 ManUtd
Southampton 0-4 ManUtd
Everton 0-2 ManUtd
ManUtd 3-0 Middlesbro
ManUtd 0-0 Exeter
ManUtd 2-1 Fulham
ManUtd 4-2 ManCity
Northampton 0-3 ManUtd
AstonVilla 1-2 ManUtd
ManUtd 0-2 Arsenal
ManUtd 6-0 WestHam
ManUtd 4-1 Portsmouth
Middlesbro 2-0 ManUtd
AstonVilla 2-3 ManUtd
ManUtd 0-1 WestHam
Fulham 1-2 ManUtd

This comes out at 16 ties at home, 15 away  to give 52% drawn at home.

However if you remove the ‘lesser’ teams i.e. take into account only the teams you’d really rather be drawn at home to face (Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa):

8 at home, 5 away to give 62% drawn at home.

Statistically irrelevant maybe, however we can be sure that neither Aston Villa nor Tottenham Hotspur fans will bat an eyelid should the fourth round bring a trip to Old Trafford in tomorrows draw.

Our prediction:

None.  Don’t bet on random events.
